On the 14th of February, Dr Benson Harrison Lyimo, general surgeon at Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre in Tanzania, received the Gerald O’Sullivan medal, awarded to the top of the class of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) Fellowship exams.
Coming from the North of Tanzania, Dr Benson grew up looking up to doctors. He recalls proudly how hard he had to study to become one, but strongly emphasises that the main reason behind his decision is to help people.

In an interview at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, we talked with Dr Benson about his origins, the importance of being a surgeon and how COSECSA is changing the way of understanding surgery education in Africa, among other topics.

Watch this video for the highlights from our conversation.
